Reading Group: The World and All It Holds by Aleksandar Hemon

The Centre for European Studies, in collaboration with the Muslim-Jewish Cultures in Europe Project, proudly presents a timely, new reading group. Join Dr. Ervin Malakaj (CENES) and Dr. Mo Pareles (English) for discussions of Aleksandar Hemon’s The World and All It Holds!

Book Summary:

This lyrical multilingual novel of love between Sarajevan soldiers—one a Sephardic Jew and the other a Muslim—on the Eastern Front of World War I takes as its theme the creation and destruction of worlds. It provocatively revises nationalist European (and North American) narratives about World War I and its aftershocks, and attends queerly to histories of solidarity and cultural intimacy between Jewish and Muslim communities in the Balkans and beyond. Please join us for a discussion of this timely novel.

The book is available through the UBC library (hard copy), Vancouver Public Library (e-book), or through your local bookstore (in hardcover now; paperback available March 4).
