Abstract:

The presentation will trace the formation and development of civic national identity among the Roma in Ukraine against the larger background of Roma history in the regions of Central, South-Eastern and Eastern Europe. What has been missing from previous research is the focus on the Romani people’s own perception of their history, as well as an acknowledgement of their agency in creating it. To fill in this gap, the discussion considers a new critical paradigm that views the Ukrainian Roma as actors of their own history from a longue durée perspective.
