Title: “What “Italian Cuisine” Means in China”
Speaker: Dr. Gaoheng Zhang, Faculty Affiliate, CES Board Member, Associate Professor of Italian, Associate Head of Italian Studies
Abstract: Dr. Gaoheng Zhang’s recent book project (under contract with University of Toronto Press), tentatively titled “Chinese Recipes, Italian Designs: Food and Fashion Cultures between Italy and China via the United States, 1980s-2010s,” examines cultural representations and dynamics pertaining to food and fashion mobilities between China and Italy that migration, commercial trade, and tourism help initiate or deepen. His analysis of the circulation of cuisine- and fashion-related communications between Chinese, Italian, and, to some extent, American public cultures helps foreground the role of material culture in the study of Italian mobilities and advances scholarship in this field which does not simplistically privilege movements from the “South” to the “North.” The book project is related to a website that deploys the Chinese concept of 衣食住行 (clothing, food, residence, mobility) in structuring discussions about Italian and Chinese material cultures: https://mobilitiesitalychina.com. He has received a SSHRC Insight Development Grant for this project.
