Call for Applications: 2018 JMEUCE Summer Research Scholar Program

Through its 2018 JMEUCE Summer Research Scholar Program, the European Studies Center (ESC), a Jean Monnet EU Center of Excellence (JMEUCE), in collaboration with the University Library System (ULS) at the University of Pittsburgh, seeks to facilitate and further research on all aspects of European integration and the European Union.  The ESC and ULS are offering two (2) research grants to post-doctoral and senior scholars to be in residence at the University of Pittsburgh.

Applicants for the JMEUCE Summer Research Scholars Program should be pursuing a research project on any aspect of European integration or the European Union.  Proposals should emphasize how the time in residence at the University of Pittsburgh will advance their research project.

Selected Scholars will reside in Pittsburgh for periods of one to four weeks between May 1, 2018 and August 15, 2018.  Awards will range between $2,000 and $3,500 USD and will take the form of reimbursements of eligible travel and accommodation costs (based upon submitted receipts).  (Please note that depending upon tax treaties in existence, awards may be subject to US tax withholdings.)  In addition, ESC staff will arrange for scholars to meet with faculty with similar interests (depending upon availability) and the ULS will provide access to and bibliographic assistance in the unique and comprehensive Barbara Sloan European Union Document Collection. JMEUCE Summer Research Scholars are expected to acknowledge support of the ESC, the ULS, and the EU in any work resulting from this research, and to deliver a public presentation of their research and preliminary findings while in Pittsburgh.

Barbara Sloan European Union Document Collection:  In 2007 the Delegation donated its library collection to the ULS at the University of Pittsburgh. The gift is a virtually complete collection of European Community documents produced from the early 1950s to 2004 which were meant for distribution.  The highlight of the collection is the research files which are about 650 linear feet of folders documents arranged by subject.  Most of the documents in these folders are smaller stapled documents, many of which would be difficult to locate elsewhere. A “finding aid” for the Sloan Collection is available on the ULS website.

Note:  Applications will be evaluated based upon the suitability of materials in the Barbara Sloan European Union Document Collection to the proposed research objectives.  Questions regarding the Sloan Collection should be directed to the ULS bibliographer who oversees the Collection, Phil Wilkin (pwilkin@pitt.edu).

To apply, visit http://www.ucis.pitt.edu/esc/visitors/summer-scholars and complete an application form including:

  • A project description (not to exceed 5 pages, double-spaced, and which includes a description of the research to be undertaken and specifically addresses the research project’s relevance to European integration and the European Union);
  • A current C.V.
  • A budget of all estimated costs (JMEUCE Summer Research Scholar grants may not cover all costs.)

Application deadline:  March 30, 2018 by 5p.m. EST.

Call for Applications: The Henri Rieben Scholarship of the Foundation (Academic Year 2018-2019)

The Henri Rieben Scholarship of the Foundation is put in contest for the 8th consecutive year.

Amounting to 3,000 CHF net per month in addition to the reimbursement of expenses for the journey (place of residence-Lausanne- place of residence), the scholarship allows advanced doctoral researchers from around the world to stay in the premises of the Foundation for a duration of one to three months (between September 3, 2018 and July 15, 2019).

Whatever the discipline of the researchers, their doctoral thesis will have to regard the history or the stakes of the European integration process, or else the relations between Switzerland and Europe.

The Scholarships awarded every academic year encourage the consultation and exploitation of the archives of the Foundation which also cover the first half of the 20th century and relate to other European issues. The Foundation also encourages the consultation of the private archives of Jacques Delors during his years of presidency of the European Commission (1985-95). These archives recently opened for research and are available for consultation in particular to the Foundation thanks to a partnership with the Institute Jacques Delors.

The grant holders selected will be based at the Farm of Dorigny, headquarters of the Foundation, situated on the Lausanne University Campus.

The applications submission deadline is March 5, 2018. The file must be electronically submitted to the secretariat of the Foundation (secr@fjme.unil.ch). Decisions will be notified to the candidates for June, 2018.

Deadline Extended: EIGPE Council of European Studies pre-conference graduate workshop

Deadline Extension: January 15th, 2018.

The European Integration and Global Political Economy Network’s 2018 Pre-Conference Ph.D. Workshop

March 27th, at the University of Illinois, Chicago (hosted by the School of Literatures, Cultural Studies and Linguistics)

Tackling uncertainty: Methodological diversity in explaining Europe

The European Union and scholars who study it are in the midst of increasing empirical uncertainty. Radical changes in domestic politics within EU member-states demonstrate that social scientists have failed to fully understand and predict the behavior of European voters. Brexit and the 2017 UK and Dutch General Elections have highlighted that even the most sophisticated (polling) methodologies can be inaccurate. EU policy-makers, too, have failed to fully comprehend the observable implications of their economic (austerity) and social (migration) policies on their citizens. This steady stream of faulty prediction in European politics and political economy over the past several years highlights the need not only for greater scrutiny of popular methodologies, but also for greater methodological diversity in studying Europe.

In line with this objective, the European Integration and Global Political Economy’s pre-conference Ph.D. workshop seeks to address the following questions: 1.) what methodologies have been most widely used to understand European political economy, and what are their strengths and weaknesses?; 2.) what political or economic phenomenon within Europe have proven most difficult to predict and study under popular methodological approaches, and; 3.) what can new methodologies, including those from other disciplines, teach us about analyzing the political economy of Europe?

This workshop will occur the day before the Council of European Studies’ 2018 Annual Conference (March 27th). It will provide participants with extensive feedback from senior scholars on their graduate research in general, and their chosen methodologies in particular. The workshop will also include an introductory lecture on mainstream methodological approaches to the study European political economy, a roundtable discussing alternative methodologies that challenge or complement these approaches, and an information session on career and publishing advice in the profession.

How to Apply:

Interested graduate students should submit an application of no more than 750 words that includes the following information: your area of research, primary research question, the literatures that you are challenging and the theoretical insights you hope to provide, and your methodological approach and the data you intend to collect (or have collected) in order to execute it. We strongly encourage first and second year Ph.D. students to apply who are in the process of structuring their Ph.D. dissertations. Applications should be sent to Alison Johnston (Alison.Johnston@oregonstate.edu) or Regine Paul (regine_paul@fas.harvard.edu). The deadline for applications is January 15th, 2018.

There is no registration fee for the workshop. This event is generously hosted by the University of Illinois, Chicago’s School of Literature, Cultural Studies and Linguistics.
