This colloquium talk revolves around Gaoheng Zhang’s new book titled Fashion Communications between Italy and China: Unfolding a Sartorial Relationship (Bloomsbury, 2025).
The author will present on the main features of the book on ready-to-wear and fast fashion, and interpret important case studies on transculturality and cultural appropriation. Then a conversation between the author and Sima Godfrey will engage with various aspects of Italian and French fashion cultures in China. The audience will have an opportunity to interact with the presenters during the Q&A.
Gaoheng Zhang is Associate Professor of Italian Studies at UBC. His recent books include three monographs, Italian Dumplings and Chinese Pizzas: Transcultural Food Mobilities (Fordham, 2025), Fashion Communications Between Italy and China: Unfolding a Sartorial Relationship (Bloomsbury, 2025), and Migration and the Media: Debating Chinese Migration to Italy, 1992–2012 (Toronto, 2019), as well as a co-edited volume, Cultural Mobilities Between China and Italy (Palgrave Macmillan, 2024).
Sima Godfrey is Associate Professor Emerita of French Studies at UBC, and the author of The Crimean War and Cultural Memory: The War France Won and Forgot (Toronto, 2023) and co-editor of The Shifting Foundations of Modern Nation States (Toronto, 2004).
