“The Body of Crime in Early Modern Rome”
This event will be held virtually.

Abstract:
This talk will explore the development of forensic medicine in early modern Italy from the perspective of criminal trial records. Focusing on witness testimonies in two cases of miscarriage caused by assault investigated in seventeenth century Rome, I show how ordinary and non-elite women made sophisticated medico-legal arguments about bodily harm and trauma, and thus directly contributed to the emergence of the specialized discipline.
